How To Connect To Allen Bradley PLC via USB

How To Connect To Allen Bradley PLC via USB

Connecting to an Allen Bradley PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) via USB can be a convenient and efficient way to communicate with the PLC and transfer data. Below we go over a few steps to connect your Allen Bradley PLC via USB.

Before you start begin, it's important to make sure that you have the following items:

  • An Allen Bradley PLC with a USB port
  • A USB cable
  • A computer or device with a USB port
  • RSLinx Classic software (available for free download from the Allen Bradley website)

Step 1: Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the Allen Bradley PLC and the USB port on your computer or device.

Step 2: Install RSLinx Classic software on your computer or device. This software allows you to communicate with the PLC over USB.

Step 3: Open RSLinx Classic software and select "New" from the "Communications" menu.

Step 4: In the "Add New Hardware" window, select "USB" from the "Device Type" drop-down menu.

Step 5: In the "USB Device" window, select the PLC from the list of connected devices. If the PLC is not listed, check that the USB cable is properly connected and that the PLC is powered on.

Step 6: Click "Finish" to complete the setup.

Step 7: Once the setup is complete, you should be able to communicate with the PLC by opening the "Communications" menu and selecting "PLC" or "Device" depending on the version of RSLinx Classic.

Remember some Allen Bradley PLC's may not support communication via USB and may require a different communication method. Be sure to consult the instruction manual for your specific PLC to ensure that it supports USB communication or a professional.

By following the steps outlined in this article and using the appropriate software such as RSLinx Classic, you can establish a USB connection with your PLC and start communicating with it.
